I am a new member so I am just introducing myself. I was diagnosed with “Fibromyalgia/CFS” in my 20s and tried integrating natural living to help control my symptoms which would wax and wane. By 2009, I was bedridden and was then diagnosed with chronic lyme unable to leave my home without a mask.
I am grateful to God that I have come so far since then, but I am still seeking answers as my sensitivities/allergies make me homebound and many physical symptoms still affect daily living. In the last year, through various resources, I have discovered how molds have likely played a significant role in my challenged health. I carry the “dreaded” HLA gene sequence and MTHR genes and grew up in a WD home.
We are now beginning a journey into looking at the safety of the home we are in, and also facing the challenge of seeking a new safe home as our family needs space. Does anyone have any input on seeking a home besides conducting an ERMI? For example, new construction tends to outgas and be difficult for someone with MCS like me, but do older home tend to be more moldy? Or is the scenario really that it is based on the quality of the build and not the age of the home?
I am looking forward to discovering the resources offered here and the feedback from women of faith that have faced similar challenges.
Blessings,
Arianne

Arianne,
So glad you made the mold connection. You are asking a great question. For our family, we decided to go with the chemicals of the newer home as opposed to risking past water damage in an older home. We adjusted to the VOCs and there are lots of tricks to minimize the impact. The ideal would be an older home that had perfect construction and maintenance.
Here is an article on other things to look for:

You can also buy a thermal imaging app for your smart phone and use it to look behind walls when searching for a home.
Here's one that is now offered.
